The Swim Spa Phenomenon

Swim spas are taking the wet leisure industry by storm. These compact swimming pools are fast becoming the must have item for anyone looking to lead a healthier lifestyle, and who can blame them. Swim spas or Exercise pools as they are sometimes called are great. They offer the user exercise or relaxation at the touch of a button, but what exactly are they.

Swim spas are essentially small swimming pools that have jets at one end to create a current in the water that the swimmer then swims against. This endless flow of water acts like a treadmill allowing the swimmer to stay in place while swimming. This makes them great for training, rehabilitation, physio therapy , or just having fun and relaxing with family and friends.

Many Swim spas now offer Hydro Therapy seats within them allowing the user to sit and relax after there swim. The problems with this is that you generally do not want to relax in 30 degree water (average swimming pool temperature), and you wouldn`t want to swim in water that is at 38-40 degrees (average hot tub temperature). Also these combined units generally do not have enough pumps to power the whole unit at one time meaning you lose power from the swim jets when the hydrotherapy seats are active and vice versa. Some companys do make dual units like Rapid Rivers AquaDual Swim spa. These units incorporate a separate Hot Tub which has its own heat and filtration system and separate jet pumps meaning you can have two separate temperatures, one for swimming and one for sitting and relaxing without losing any power from your jet pumps.

Swim spas generally come as either inground or relocatable. In ground swim spas come as a one piece shell usual made of fibreglass that is lowered into a pit in the ground and then back filled with earth. All the plumbing and electrics then run to a pump room. A relocatable Swim spa is built inside a metal or wooden frame, the components are then housed internally within the frame work of the swim spa. The major differences are inground swim spas have little or no insulation which make them expensive to keep warm, and they are built into the garden meaning you would have to leave it behind if you were to move house. are as the name suggests moveable. They come as a stand alone unit that is already plumbed, you simply fill them up and plug them in and they are ready to use. The bonus with a relocatable Relocatable Swim spas is that it can also be sunk to ground level as per the manufacturers installation instuctions.
